When same-sex couples were joined under a domestic partnership agreement, a dissolution is then sought under a civil action. Any enforcement of agreements made between domestic partners is governed under the California Supreme Court decision in Marvin v. Marvin. The general principle in Marvin is that nonmarital couples can enforce implied and express contracts made in relation to property and support rights ("palimony").
